In The Pines

Christmas at Federation Square 2011.
Event dates: 1st December 2011 – 25th December 2011.
“In the Pines is a traditional folk song which dates back to the 1870s and is believed to be Southern Appalachian in origin. The song forms the basis for over 160 different recorded renditions and each generation has brought their own interpretation to the song. We believe that the folk tradition of Christmas lends itself to the same sort of multitude of meaning and as such has the ability to escape a fixed or conservative single interpretation. It is with this in mind that we have linked the iconic Christmas pine with the song In The Pines to allow a rich and diverse response.” – These are The Projects we do together (The Projects) 2011
Federation Square was home to a forest of 150 plastic (100% recycled) trees called In The Pines.
In The Pines sees the humble plastic tree that is found in so many lounge rooms in December erupting from suburbia into a moveable forest, magically shifting and opening up to unexpected delights.
Throughout the month there were a range of engaging and playful events free to all. These events activated and transformed the forest and we invited the public to become part of the festivities.
This project was designed and curated by The Projects with original drawings by Mary Leunig.
