Brunswick's new purpose‑built creative and community precinct. A place for community groups to meet and gather, and for arts practices to develop new work in affordable and flexible settings.
We are delighted to introduce you to Balam Balam Place, your new purpose-built creative and community precinct located in the heart of Brunswick.
Situated on the recently redeveloped former home of Siteworks, this is a new space for community groups to meet and gather for workshops, talks and celebrations; for arts practices to develop work in affordable and flexible settings; for students and educators to utilise contemporary facilities outside the institutional campus; and for professional practices to find a new office within a vibrant and active centre.
Balam Balam Place is where collaboration is nurtured and diverse communities thrive through cooperation and mutual support.

The precinct has been thoughtfully designed by Kennedy Nolan in collaboration with Openwork and Finding Infinity.
Situated amongst open grounds and gardens, Balam Balam Place consists of three buildings — South, House and Steps.
South is a new purpose-built, five-level building with a range of community, creative and commercial spaces. South incorporates Blak Dot Gallery, Blakademy and Maternal Child Health alongside community amenities including meeting rooms, large event spaces, a shared kitchen, and a bookable commercial kitchen. Home Economics coffee shop is open on the Ground Floor from 8am each day.
House is a two-level heritage building from 1888 and fully refurbished. Located in the centre of the precinct, it accommodates cultural and community groups as well as small offices.
Steps is to the north of the precinct and is a thoughtfully re-purposed building shell and remnant of the site’s former school, providing undercover open-air spaces. Steps opens onto Phoenix Street and is suitable for creative and community events and activities as well as being a valuable impromptu community gathering area.

Community spaces are suitable for a range of uses including meetings, workshops, hosted talks, movie nights and community events. These spaces range from small meeting rooms to large function rooms with a commercial kitchen available.
Creative spaces, located primarily on the top floor of South, have large open-plan layouts and abundant natural light. Creative spaces are suitable for group activities, theatre and creative development, workshops, symposiums, and classes.
Commercial office spaces are suitable for design and creative practices. A range of single tenancies for organisations, and shared offices for small teams and individuals.

We respectfully acknowledge the Wurundjeri people of the Eastern Kulin Nation as traditional custodians, on whose unceded lands we work and live.
We respectfully acknowledge elders – past, present and emerging. And we extend our deepest respects to all First Nations peoples. In the context of the work we do, we express gratitude for our shared connection through place, to the oldest continuing cultures on earth.
